NEXT GENERATION OF ARTISTS

TOP's "Drama Discoveries" @ Girls Inc. of Monroe County in Bloomington, IN
Purpose: To explore early childhood dramatic arts outreach and inspire self-confidence among female artists with little to no experience or specific interest in theatre.
Objectives: TOP will work with young ladies of varying demographic backgrounds ages 5 to 15 who are participating in Girls Inc's afterschool and school-break programs. TOP will utilize theatre games to encourage young girls to assert themselves positively, gain confidence in their artistic choices, develop teamwork building strategies, and individually accomplish personal storytelling goals. TOP will include basic knowledge about the art of theatre in "Drama Discovery" workshops to instill an understanding and appreciation of the craft of theatrical artwork. TOP will also use age and skill appropriate skits, monologues, songs, or poems for girls to perform for their peers and parents at the conclusion of each Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter session.
Methods: * Facilitate a 16-week Spring and Fall Program, a week-long daily Summer Camp, and a Winter Camp of various workshops. * Include all girls in challenging performance art that includes oral communication activities aimed at improving public speaking and active listening skills, and positive self expression that is strong, smart, and bold. * Incorporate teamwork exercises ensemble-building efforts into all programs that include examples of appropriate audience participation and critical thinking about art and artwork. * Demonstrate and discuss various aspects of performance art including self confidence, vocal clarity and volume, and posture. * Encourage participants to practice theatre art skills beyond the workshop process. * Present a showcase-like performance at the end of each session.
